IT'S FINALS TIME: TWENTY OF FOOTY'S FUNNIEST LINES
It’s now over 36 hours since my AFL team, whose fortunes I can’t separate from my own, missed out on a finals berth by .6 of a percentage point. And although I’m sad and angry, I haven’t forgotten how much I love the game, and its media. Back in 2013, I had a segment on Channel Seven’s Saturday Night Football broadcast called Media Street which was devoted to the verbal slip-ups of footballers and commentators. During that year, I must’ve watched over 800 hours of footage in search of malapropisms, spoonerisms and eggcorns, and can safely say that AFL word-mangling is world class word-mangling. It’s up there with the Premier League’s Stuart Pearce - "I can see the carrot at the end of the tunnel”, the NBA’s Drew Gooden - “I’ve had to overcome a lot of diversity”, and cricket’s Ian Healy – “Beautifully catched.”
Good luck to everyone whose team made the finals. For the rest of us, here are 20 hilarious footy quotes to get you through the next three minutes….
