MICHAEL GAMBON'S AUDITION STORY HAS OLIVIER, BLOOD, AND A HAPPY ENDING
I always though Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, Gosford Park) was born a legend of the British theatre. It’s hard to believe he was young once too - and auditioning for Sir Laurence Olivier in the hope that the greatest actor in the world would give him his break. But for his audition, Gambon had made a diplomatic error in that he’d decided to perform the role that Sir Laurence had recently made famous.
The story of Gambon’s breakthrough comes from Tony Sher’s legendary actor’s memoir - Year of the King, and popped into public consciousness again when it was screen-grabbed by a Tweeter called Isaac Butler.
