Here’s one of the scariest videos in cricket where 45-year-old helmet-less Brian Close faces Michael Holding at his peak. Close was pounded for two-and-a-half hours on a volatile wicket, by one of the most brutal displays of fast bowling ever seen from Holding, Andy Roberts and Wayne Daniel. When his innings ended, he’d made 20 off 108 balls. It would be his last innings and finished a test career spanning 27 years. Close died of lung cancer at 84.

Mark Waugh dabbled with backing away and ramping this stuff over the slips in the 90s. Accusations of cowardice then. Commonplace now. Ahead of his time.
Brutal. Just wondering why Holding didn't slam the bails when Close walks off the crease in that first ball.
